 The American Prize is honored to announce the winner of  The American Prize in Arts Education, 2021.  Congratulations!


The American Prize in Arts Education recognizes and rewards the best education campaigns by performing arts organizations in America, based on submitted applications. The contest seeks evidence of campaigns that combine inspiration and creativity with demonstrable success, regardless of the budget available.

COVID EXTENSIONS to APPLY for 2022: Because of the current national and international situation, many rules have been changed and requirements eased to make it easier to apply for The American Prize, 2022. In addition, application deadlines have been extended with further extensions available by email request. 

Applications from COMPOSERS, CLASSICAL VOCALISTS, PIANISTS, CHAMBER ENSEMBLES and INSTRUMENTAL SOLOISTS will be accepted through the revised deadline of Tuesday, July 20, 2021, with extensions available by email request.

Applications from CONDUCTORS, STAGE DIRECTORS, CONDUCTED ENSEMBLES, ARTS ADMINISTRATORS (arts marketing, arts education) in the performance of American Music (BACON AWARD) and in the new category of VIRTUAL PERFORMANCE will be accepted until Tuesday, July 20, 2021, with extensions available by email request.

The American Prize winner: 
Sean Murphy

Sean Murphy

Dr. Sean Murphy is Assistant Professor of Arts Management & Entrepreneurship at Baldwin Wallace University. He also serves as the area coordinator for BW’s Music Industry program, named a “Top Music Business School” by Billboard Magazine in 2020.  In 2021, Dr. Murphy was named the winner of the American Prize in Arts Education, the nation’s most comprehensive contest in the classical arts. Working with many leading composers of the wind band idiom, Sean is the founder of Murphy Music Press publishing, celebrated for its “intentional diversity and inclusivity” by composer Alex Shapiro.   In 2021, music from the Murphy Music Press catalog was featured at the Presidential Inauguration Ceremony for Joe Biden.   As a saxophonist, Sean is a Selmer-Paris artist, whose performances have been described as “truly beautiful” by Jamie Bernstein.  His debut album, Rediscovering Bauzin, was “warmly recommended” by Fanfare Magazine, and his articles on saxophone performance, pedagogy, and entrepreneurship have been published in both domestic and international journals.



2nd Place:

Dr. Darren P. Lawson is dean of the School of Fine Arts and Communication at Bob Jones University in Greenville, SC. He has a BA in Rhetoric and Public Address and an MA in Platform Arts from Bob Jones University and PhD in Communication Studies from the University of Kansas. He is a member of the University Classic Players and has portrayed such roles as Cyrano in Cyrano de Bergerac, Leontes in The Winter’s Tale, Gloucester in King Lear, Henry in King Henry IV, Duke of Buckingham in Richard III: The Terrible Reign, Bottom the Weaver in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Macduff in Macbeth, Jaques in As You Like It, Feste in Twelfth Night, and others. He stage directs for the BJU Opera Association with productions including Titanic: The Musical, Little Women: The Broadway Musical, Aida, Samson et Dalila, Andrea Chenier, Mefistofele, L’Elisir d’Amore, Rigoletto, Il Trovatore, and Simeon.

For the past 16 years, Hawai’i Performing Arts Festival has continued to provide world-class training and performance opportunities to aspiring young artists, both from Hawai’i Island and worldwide. Following their time at HPAF, the organization’s alumni have gone on to grace some of the world’s greatest stages, most notably The Metropolitan Opera, New York City Opera, English National Opera, Royal Opera House, Florida Grand Opera, Los Angeles Opera, and have appeared in film and television, on Broadway, National Tours, and regionally. Now preparing for its 17th season on the Big Island, Hawai’i Performing Arts Festival brings some of the most talented young musicians from Hawai’i, the U.S., Canada, Australia, Asia, Africa, the Middle East, South America, and Europe to Hawai’i Island each summer for intensive study and performance training, affording young artists the opportunity perform with professional musicians under the guidance of some of the world’s most established teachers and mentors.
